DID YOU KNOW THAT WE WERE NAMED MARIJUANA DISPENSARY OF THE YEAR IN THE WESTWOOD AREA?

We’re big fans of this commercial and residential neighborhood. Bordered by Beverly Hills to the east and Century City on the southeast, it’s one of the best locations in West LA. It’s also a college student’s paradise as the home to the University of California, Los Angeles campus. Westwood is full of cultural attractions like the Fox Theatre, the Hammer Museum, and the Geffen Playhouse. And the food! Westwood has some of our favorite hidden culinary gems like Mary & Robbs Westwood Cafe, Attari Grill, Diddy Riese, and 800 Degrees Pizza in Westwood Village.

why we love westwood

Westwood is much more than a charming college town. With plenty of historical landmarks, Meditteranean architecture, and cultural attractions, it holds its own as one of the best neighborhoods in West LA. The Fox Theatre is the most notable image of Westwood, as it’s hosted countless film premiers over the years. There’s also the Hammer Museum, an incredible museum of modern and contemporary art that is free to the public. The UCLA campus has the Fowler Museum, featuring art from Africa, Asia, and the Americas, as well as the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden with outdoor sculpture installations.

DID YOU KNOW THAT WESTWOOD WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT AS THE OPERATIONS CENTER OF A LUMBER COMPANY?

T.B. Walker built it back in 1913 as the center of the Red River Lumber Company, which was credited as “the world’s largest electrical sawmill” in its day. An advertising copywriter working for the company created pamphlets using the legendary folk character, Paul Bunyon to promote the company. Lumberjacks are still an important part of Westwood’s history – there is a 22 foot Paul Bunyon statue, and Westwood High School still carries the nickname of “the Lumberjacks”.

Westwood might just be the neighborhood with the most “did you know” facts in its history. For example, Steve McQueen and members of the rat pack used to spend a lot of time in Westwood. It also had its own year-round ice skating rink from 1938-1949 called the Tropical Ice Gardens, which was constructed in 1938 and could hold 12,000 people. UCLA moved to Westwood in 1929, and has some pretty famous alums, including Jeames Dean, Jim Morrison, Jackie Robinson, and John Williams.
