Culver City has been the epicenter of culture and the arts since the 1920’s when it was the go-to location for film production. Now, Culver City has numerous attractions like the Kirk Douglas Theatre and the Culver City Public Theatre. Visitors looking for a behind-the-scenes look at film production can take a studio tour of Sony Pictures Studios. Culver City also hosts events like California Arts Day, Music in the Chambers, and the Culver City Music Festival. The city Art District is filled with notable art galleries, such as FP Contemporary Art Gallery.
History of Movie Magic
Culver City’s first film studio was developed in 1918, and since then, its three notorious studios have produced hundreds of films and television series.
In the 1990’s, Downtown Culver was completely renovated. Today, the area is a family-friendly spot filled with outdoor cafes, galleries, restaurants, and boutique shops.
Access to Nature
Culver is home to many outdoor parks. The Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook is an urban park at the southeastern edge of the city and provides a beautiful escape for visitors and residents.
Did you know that the interest Culver City’s founder had in motion picture is one of the reasons it became such a significant hub for film and television?
Incorporated in 1917, the city was founded by real estate developer Harry Culver. Sony, originally MGM, Culver Studios, and the former Hal Roach Studios were all located within this town. With a nickname like “The Heart of Screenland”, it’s no surprise that films such as The Wizard of Oz, The Thin Man, Rebecca, and Gone with the Wind are just a few big names from a list of hundreds that were produced here.
Culver City is full of interesting facts and trivia. Scenes in the films Grease, Bewitched, Fun with Dick and Jane, Superbad, Moneyball, and Horrible Bosses were all filmed here. The Culver Hotel downtown housed many cast members from The Wizard of Oz during its filming in 1939. One of Culver’s local shops is The Ripped Bodice, which is the only romance novel bookstore in the northern hemisphere. It’s also where Howard Hughes opened the headquarters for his Hughes Aircraft Company from 1932 to 1986.
