why we love los angeles

The City of Angels has it all. With wonderful weather and a laid-back vibe, Los Angeles is one of the most inviting places in the United States. As the focal point of the entertainment industry, sights like the Hollywood Sign, the Walk of Fame, and the TCL Chinese Theatre bring in countless tourists every day. The city is so diverse in its attractions that there is something for everyone. Outdoor enthusiasts can appreciate the beaches or hiking options like Runyon Canyon or the Culver City Steps. Griffith Park has over 4,000 acres of open space, and it’s one of the biggest urban parks in the United States.

DID YOU KNOW THAT WHEN LOS ANGELES WAS FOUNDED, THE CITY’S FULL NAME WAS EL PUEBLO DE NUESTRA SEÑORA REINA DE LOS ÁNGELES SOBRE EL RÍO PORCIÚNCULA?

This translates to “the town of our lady queen of the angels on the Porciuncula River”. The area was originally occupied by the Tongva Native Americans, until Portugeuse and Spanish explorers found the area. It passed from Spanish control to Mexican control when Mexico achieved independence from Spain in 1821. In 1848, Mexico released control of California to the United States, making all residents U.S. citizens.

Los Angeles has an interesting history and plenty of little-known-facts. In 1892, oil was discovered in what is now Dodger’s Stadium. By the 1920’s the city produced a quarter of the world’s oil. Beverly Hills got its start as a lima bean ranch, the Santa Monica Pier was designed to protect a sewage pipe dumping into the ocean, and the original Hollywood sign read “Hollywoodland”. It is also illegal to drive more than 2000 sheep down Hollywood Boulevard or to lick a toad in the city.
